Project WET 2006
On Friday, September 22nd, 2006 area fourth graders attended the seventh annual “Make-A-Splash with Project WET” Festival held at the Campbell Creek Science Center. While the weather made it a very wet Project WET celebration, the students still had the opportunity to have fun while learning how insects can indicate the health of the creek.
Students from local elementary schools collected and observed aquatic insects from Campbell Creek and learned that macroinvertebrates are an indicator of habitat health, that they are easy to observe and collect, and that they display a wide variety of adaptations. Students learned about the metamorphosis life cycle of the Caddisfly and participated in activities that determined the needs of the different life stages, including water, food, shelter and space. Finally, the students were able to make their own imaginative bug creatures with different adaptations needed for survival.
This event brought together students, teachers, and agency representatives for one cause: to raise awareness of the need for water education and draw attention to the vital role this precious resource plays in our everyday lives. Established in 1984, Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is an international water science and education program dedicated to teaching children around the world about water stewardship and conservation.
